A Very Special Sprouts Graduation
Early intervention saves lives

How many days does it take to change a life? In the case of four-year-old Mason*, it was 251 days.

Two-hundred and fifty-one days of therapy, empathy, and helping him feel safe. Two-hundred and fifty-one days of nurturing and care by skilled teachers and clinicians. Two-hundred and fifty-one days in our Sprouts: Trauma-Informed Care Preschool.

Mason came to the special preschool on the Children’s Receiving Home campus feeling scared and uncertain. He was in foster care but going through the process of being reunited with his family. He cried most days and kept to himself. The teachers and clinicians worked with him patiently and consistently. They established a routine to make him feel comfortable and used play therapy to teach him how to express the deep emotions he carried with him from his past traumatic experiences.

Over time, Mason’s teachers began to see him blossom. He was slowly leaving his early trauma behind and moving forward towards a brighter future. He learned how to express himself in positive ways, use “emotion” words, and started to progress academically. The constant tears became a thing of the past, and Mason’s real personality began to shine through the darkness.

Mason graduated from the Sprouts: Trauma-Informed Care Preschool early this month. He stood at the front of the class, proudly wearing his sparkly green graduation hat the teachers had decorated just for him. Confident and happy, he was now ready to attend and succeed in a traditional preschool program – something that would have been impossible 251 days before.

Sprouts is a program that changes lives. It takes young children who have experienced abuse, neglect, and sometimes unimaginable trauma and puts them on a path of healing. It intervenes early, before these children have had to carry too much baggage for too long. It steps in before the damage done becomes irreversible. This special program is made possible in large part due to the generosity of donors, and we are so grateful for their support.

Mason will transition to a traditional preschool in the fall – happy and confident, far beyond where he was when he started Sprouts. We wish him and his family the best for a new and brighter future!
