Our Program
As a shelter, the Children’s Receiving Home is a refuge, where children stay for an average of 25 to 30 days and can heal from
the abuse they have suffered. While their future living arrangements are being explored, children receive:
- a comprehensive level of services including shelter, food, clothing
-
medical and dental attention
- education at our on-site school
- recreation and activities
-
social work intervention including case management services
- a full scale assessment and diagnosis
- Mental Health screening
the opportunity to process what they are experiencing among
other children who have been through what they have been through
As a result of these services, children are better prepared for and matched with
their next step placement thus increasing their chances for success.
The facility is licensed annually by the State Department of Social Services to
provide care for 98 children ages 1 to 17. The Children’s Receiving Home is available
twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, for the admission of children. Children
are in crisis when they are admitted to this facility, and our objective is to be
supportive and as constructive as possible during their stay here.
The program includes supportive counseling on the court process and the problems
involved with being removed from home and placed in a group setting, provided by
Social Work, Mental Health, and Residential staff. The educational component is
provided on grounds by the San Juan Unified School District. Grades 1-12 are served
in an individualized program, which meets each child’s educational needs as determined
through assessment and coordination with the appropriate community school. A positive
school experience and continuity of education for the child are program objectives.
The Children’s Receiving Home also has a Mental Health Program funded through a
contract with Sacramento Mental Health utilizing Early Periodic Screening, Diagnosis
and Treatment (EPSDT) funding. EPSDT is designed to improve the health of low-income
children by financing appropriate and necessary pediatric services.
Medical services are also available for all children residing at the Home. The Children’s
Receiving Home has a medical clinic on site and provides physicals for children
through the Child Health and Disability Prevention Program (CHDP). Other medical
services are also provided for the children residing at the home provided by on-site
medical staff.
